Jon Byers // 1988 News Story

Just came across this old news footage of Jon Byers from about 88′. I sweated Jon so hard around 90, 91. He had such a monster pump! I always wish he could have had a normal part in the Bully Slow Ride video. The slow mo really took away from the power he rode with. Anyways check this out. That backyard setup looks nice and fun!

He was definitely underrated. I think he was one of those guys (guys like Perry Mervar and Gerry Smith were other ones) who had the misfortune of hitting their prime right as the industry fell apart. Had he came along a year or two earlier, he would’ve been a high profile AFA guy (a probably have made lots of money too), a bit later, probably on the HB team or Standard or something and at all the Bike Stunt comps. I mostly remember him from the old KOV comps. He showed up at an NBL comp that was held in shopping center parking lot in Myrtle Beach in 1991 riding for Wilkerson Airlines, but the ramp for that comp was 7 feet tall and 7 feet wide, I don’t remember him riding that day.

Darren, I built the ramp for that contest using plans Jon gave me. It was 8′ high and 8’wide. And Jon had broken his leg prior to the contest, otherwise he would have ride, and I’m sure he would have dominated every one there.
